Subject: PhD Opportunity in Computer Vision for Beef Cattle Phenotyping
Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2025 20:47:46 -0500
Greetings from Down Under!
Background:
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Animal Science
Group at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia. This project
will investigate the application of computer vision to develop novel,
objective measures of structural soundness in beef cattle. The digital
phenotypes generated from this project will be integrated with genomic
information to inform breeding decisions aimed at enhancing animal welfare
and improving the efficiency of beef production systems.
Applicant:
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with a
interdisciplinary team of experts from both industry and academia. We
encourage applicants from diverse disciplines, including animal science,
computer science, biomechanics, and related fields, to apply. The
successful applicant is expected to actively engage in all aspects of the
project, including field data collection, development of computer vision
pipelines, data analysis, publication of research findings, and
collaboration with academic and industry partners. The position is fully
funded, and the successful applicant will receive a scholarship package
including a stipend ($36,862 AUD, 2025 rate), plus potential industry-
funded top-up scholarships and additional support for associated study and
enrolment costs.
